The DH165L0 decoder F0F and F0R headlight functions are factory configured with an onboard current regulator for the factory-installed low voltage bulbs (or LEDs) when using a maximum DCC track voltage of up to 16Volts. I have a Broadway Limited Import diesel locomotive equipped with factory DCC and Sound. Every time I turn on my Digitrax Zephyr DCS50 the engine starts to short out. It begins to slow down and then jerks a little and sometimes it stops completely. My Zephyr shows a line of flickering zeros across the dial and the engine decoder number even flickers on and off at times. I have my Kato Switches hooked up to a standard switch panel with toggle momentary switches. Can I hook up the DS51K1 stationary decoder in addition to this wiring? In other words, if hooked up the DS51K1 to the Kato Switch Machine that was already wired to another source to throw the switch, would the momentary power damage the decoder when it is operated by the standard control panel? How do I get all the engines of a consist to run at the same speed? I have 3 engines with DH163A0 decoders and one with a MRC sound decoder. All units have the same top speed, but the unit with the MRC decoder starts and accelerates more quickly. Getting a group of locomotives to operate at the same speed can be a challenge. Experience has proven that it is best to work with the slowest locomotive and bring the other locomotives into agreement with that engine. Q: I have seen notes several times where the author recommends removing the capacitors that are in the Bachmann circuit boards before installing a DCC decoder. Can you comment on the need for this? Is it universal for the Bachmann steam locos? A: As a rule, all capacitors must be removed from locos before installing decoders. Also, any choke coils must be removed, too. Both capacitors and choke coils cause problems with DCC signals. If you are unsure, a Google search for the locomotive type and the term "DCC" often produces an article specifically about the locomotive installation in question.
Zephyr Xtra (DCS51) and Zephyr (DCS50) systems can program Soundtraxx Tsunami decoders using Blast Mode Programming on the Mainline. Blast Mode Programming will program EVERYTHING sitting on the main line track so, you MUST remove everything from the track that you are not programming or use an isolated piece of track connected to Rail A & B. The following CV settings have been found to give great performance from the Trix Mikado. These settings were discovered by Norm Stenzel after much trial and error. There have been reports of headlight problems with some DN143K2 decoders; the unit will be running in one direction but the headlights are backwards. There is a simple fix for this problem. Set CV33=2 and CV34=1; this will remap the function outputs F0F and F0R.
I have Diesels with Atlas sound or decoder, Bachmann EZ command and Soundtraxx decoders. Will the DCC Super Chief work with these decoders? Yes. Because the Atlas, Bachmann and Soundtraxx decoders are DCC compatible, they will work with any Digitrax system. There may be a issues related to programming with these decoders that require special attention. Please consult the decoder instructions for the particular locomotive to determine if any special steps are necessary in your particular situation.
Kato makes a Unitrack double-crossover, their No. 20210: Kato has advised us that this unit has four solenoids in its base, each operating one turnout point set. Connecting the DS51K1 to the red / black wire pair at the base of the track will damage the decoder since the four solenoids of the crossover will draw more than the rated current capacity of the DS51K1. I have a DH165AO decoder and Sound Bug and am installing the decoders into an Athearn SD70 Locomotive.The motor controller works and the sound as well. However, I am unable to get the lights to work. I connected the wire leads exactly as they where on the Athearn light board. Athearn uses twin forward and rear 1.5 volt lights yet the DH165AO will not power the bulbs. It will power one bulb at either end but not two. The single bulb setup glows very brightly but for a short time. So I tried using the 47 ohm resistor in parallel ...

Q: I have a Digitrax Chief system. I wired the programming track as per the manual, using PROGA and PROGB outputs on the DCS100. I turned on the system and checked the track voltage with a Tony Trains RRamp meter, the mainline read 14.2 volts. The programing track did not read anything. The DZ121 was discontinued in 2002. There were some interoperability issues with Easy DCC, MRC and Lenz. The exchange offer is no long valid. We actually have several Life-Like Proto's sitting around for conversion to DCC, including an older GP-18, older FA's and such that date back to the days when DCC was just a twinkle in AJ's eyes. One of our editors was able to successfully install both the Digitrax DN163K1B and DN163K1C decoders in the unit. I am installing a DH165A0 in an Athearn SD70. The head light outputs are a nominal 30 ma (with the link cut). The bulbs were of course a bit lower in their current demands and were very bright for a short while. Is there any way to lower the current output from 30ma or do I need to add a resistor in line with the bulb to drop the voltage output? Life-Like Proto 2000 locomotives with number board lights have the number board bulbs wired to their 8-pin DCC plug using pins 4 and 5. This causes no problems with DC operation but causes a path from the rail pickup to the gray motor lead when a decoder is installed resulting in erratic operation and decoder failure.This is a known problem in the Proto 2000 GP60, SD60M and LifeLike GP38-2. I have a DCS50 Zephyr system. I'm having a great deal of problems with it when I try to run (2) loco's equipped with LOK SOUND and DCC decoders (by ESU). What happens is that it cuts in and out 3 to 5 times on each revolution of the train. I see it cutting out on turnouts sometimes, but not on straight track. The current recommendation is for direct soldering, using either DZ125, which controls headlights only or DZ143, which controls headlight and two additional functions. Your Athearn example uses the DH123/143 series with the AT clip option, can the DZ123 be used for Athearn older diesels? I am interested because of the small space in S2/4 models. Is the 1 amp DZ123 an option I can use? It is possible that the DZ123 could be used in the older Athearn switchers, but the most important issue will be how much electrical current that the locomotive requires. Function Controls F9-F12 Some Broadway Limited Locomotives use Functions F0-F12 when running in DCC mode. In some cases F9-F12 do not respond properly. Q: I have 2 Broadway non-sound F7 DC locos. I bought 2 DH163IP decoders for them. However the decoder is too large to fit into the 8 pin plug provided on the PC board in the loco. A: We recommend a DZ146PS for those locomotives. They will fit in the space available. Don't be confused by the Z designation of this decoder, it is rated at a full 1 amp to run most HO locos but it is small enough to fit in Z scale locos.

I bought 2 DN163I1A and 2 DN163I1B decoders which have brass . My 4 Inter Mountain FT units do not have brass motor contacts (as I found too late on your DN163I1C documentation for F3 units) but rather 2 wires soldered to the original board. Also, the DN163I1A or B can't be fitted in the space provided on the engine not only because the brass contacts on the decoder get in the way but because on the size of the decoder board is a little too big. The PM42 was specifically designed to work with Digitrax Direct Home wired layouts. Any system that is configured this way will work with the PM42 with no interoperability issues. For example, CVP uses interoperable booster connections.The PM42 can be used with a DC system if it is hooked up in the negative ground return path, or even a Marklin AC digital (trinary) booster. The sound in your decoder shuts down after you stop it and you are not using a Digitrax system for control. On some DCC systems decoders are not addressed by DCC packets after the locomotive is set to 0 speed. In this case after the CV11 timeout elapses (6 second factory default setting for SoundFX decoders), sound will shut down. To remove the timeout and prevent sound shutdown, set CV11=00. There is a potential problem using the DCC socket on the Life Like Proto2000 S-1. While the trucks and track pick-ups are isolated from the frame, there is a brass grounding lug attached to the motor's lower brush cap which makes electrical contact between the lower motor brush and the frame. As a result if the wheels come in contact with the frame a short occurs and the decoder may be damaged!
