The PR3 is a dual-purpose USB 2.0 device - In Programmer Mode, along with SoundLoaderTM software on a PC or Mac computer, the Digitrax PR3 Programmer lets users create, manage, test, and download Digitrax sound projects to SoundFX decoders.
In MS100 Mode, the PR3 interfaces from a Windows-compatible or Mac personal computer to the Digitrax LocoNet system for use by 3rd party software such as Decoder Pro, Railroad and Co*., etc.
Using Digitrax PR3 Programmer and Digitrax SoundLoader TM software with your PC and programming track, you can create, manage, test, and download sound projects (.spj files) in your Digitrax SoundFX decoders. You can customize your Digitrax SoundFX decoders to your heart’s content!
Using the SoundTest TM feature you can even try out different SoundFX decoder sound projects. Just put the SoundFX equipped locomotive on the PR3 programming track and use the SoundTest feature to run the speed up or down and set any combination of functions to on or off while the locomotive remains stationary on the programming track.
Digitrax PR3 Programmer comes with:
- PR3
- SoundLoader Software
- Installation CD and instructions
- USB Cable needed to hook up your PC's USB port.
In addition, you’ll need:
- A 12-15V DC Power Supply - Digitrax recommends the
PS14
(Power supply not needed for MS100 operation)
- A Computer running Windows/MAC OS with SoundLoader or equivalent program running
- An isolated programming track section (You won't need
a power booster” to increase programming track
voltage.)

* Version 5.8 of the Railroad & Co. software does not officially support the PR3. The new version 7.0 of Railroad & Co. has explicit support for the PR3.
From the "JMRI Hardware Guide: Connecting to a Digitrax PR3"
"Support for the Digitrax PR3 was first available in JMRI 2.1.6, released May 31, 2008.
The Digitrax PR3 can be used as either a standalone decoder programmer much like the PR2, or as an interface between your computer and a LocoNet, much like an MS100. It can only do one or the other of these at a given time. You select the mode of operation in the JMRI preferences during setup.
When the PR3 is acting as a programmer, it can be used to set CVs in all decoders that DecoderPro supports. It can also be used to download sound information into Digitrax sound decoders and, within its limited current capability, run one locomotive to test it. When used with Digitrax SFX decoders, "neutral mode" allows you to vary the speed without the motor moving the deocder, so you can hear how the locomotive sound reacts to varying speeds. (Note that Digitrax only guarantees programming for Digitrax SFX decoders with properly installed loads, etc, but our testing has found that the PR3 will work with many common decoders)
When acting as an interface, the PR3 allows JMRI full control of the LocoNet and the devices attached to it. That includes programming decoders on a programming track attached to a LocoNet command station, or on the main track. The PR3 can also serve as the "LocoNet terminator", which allows it to drive a LocoNet without an attached command station, e.g. if you want to have a LocoNet dedicated to signaling."
