Wiring Protocol (What Color Wire Goes Where?)

In order to simplify our wiring diagrams, instruction sheets and general model railroad wiring, the following wire colors are suggested for wiring layouts and accessories.

Your protocol calls for violet/brown wires for "AC power leads to boosters and command stations." Smoking or chewing, don't these applications require 110VAC?

(To clarify, "AC power leads to boosters and command stations coming from Digitrax power supplies (step-down transformers), which are low voltage. Ed.)

I'm with Clyde--I can't find the rainbow your standard specifies in finer gauges (18AWG and smaller)--Red, Black and White are about it.

(Personally, I had no problem obtaining the complete range of colors in 22 Gauge stranded wire from Walthers. It's manufactured by Miniatronics (Walthers vendor No. 475).)

What were you smoking when you came up with the 110VAC colors? Have you ever seen a Romex or UF cable in that color convention?

(What 110V colors? Besides, Romex seems to be a little on the heavy side for model railroad purposes.)

(Mom always told us to not smoke, so we chew. Ed.)

This was great! This helps in tracing wires and preventing wrong connections.

It would be nice if you would include a source for the wire , in all the colors in the protocol. I can't find a source that has all the specified colors in 20 or 22 Ga. wire.

(While we cannot recommend a specific vendor, several of us have used Digi-Key with great success. A Google search, using the term "22 gauge wire", turns up a large number of suppliers. The smaller wire appears to be quite popular with the robot building hobbyists. Ed.)

MY SWITCHES ARE COLOR CODED BLACK & RED & THE FEEDER WIRE IS BLUE & WHITE.WHY DOES THIS NOT AGREE WITH THE STANDARDS ?

(There are a variety of standards for wire color. You are referring to the Kato wire color standard, but there also are wire color "standards" for Märklin, LGB, Atlas, Roco and several others. It would be nice if there was some consistency for general wiring standards. Fortunately, there are established wire color standards for the mobile decoders; perhaps there will be such a standard industry-wide some day. ed)
